10 Small Daily Habits That Keep a Relationship Strong (Even on Your Busiest Weeks)

Many people think romance is about grand gestures: expensive dinners, surprise trips, elaborate gifts. Those are lovely, but research on relationships suggests that what really predicts lasting happiness is the accumulation of small, everyday moments of connection. For nurses and their partners, who can’t always plan big dates around unpredictable rotas, that’s good news. Here are ten habits that take minutes but make a lasting difference.

1. Greet each other properly

When one of you comes home, stop what you’re doing, look up, and greet them warmly. A hug at the door after a shift says “you matter more than my phone”.

2. Say thank you for small things

“Thanks for making tea.” “Thanks for doing the school run.” Appreciation prevents the resentment that builds when efforts go unnoticed.

3. The six-second kiss

Relationship researcher John Gottman suggests a kiss lasting at least six seconds, long enough to feel connected rather than routine. Try it when you part and reunite.

4. Ask one real question a day

Beyond “How was work?”, try “What was the best and hardest part of today?” See 25 deeper questions.

5. Phone-free time

Even 15–20 minutes a day without phones or TV, perhaps during a meal, creates space for real connection.

6. Turn towards bids

When your partner says “Look at this” or sighs heavily, they’re making a bid for attention. Responding (“What is it?” “Are you okay?”) builds trust. Ignoring bids, again and again, slowly erodes it.

7. A message during the day

A quick text on a break: “Thinking of you.” See 50 sweet messages for night shift.

8. Do one small thing to make their day easier

Iron their uniform, pack their lunch, fill the car with fuel, take the bins out without being asked.

9. Pray, reflect or plan together

For couples of faith, a short prayer together can be deeply bonding. Others might share a gratitude moment, or a quick look at the week ahead.

10. End the day with reassurance

Even after a disagreement, or when one of you is heading out for a night shift, say “I love you”. Never let a day end without it.

Start with one

Don’t try all ten at once. Pick one or two this week and notice the difference. Small things, done consistently, become the foundation of a strong relationship.
