Nursing does not stay at work. Slowly, without noticing, it moves into your home, your conversations and your shopping basket. Here are 25 signs it has completely taken over. Count how many apply to you.
You know you’ve been a nurse too long when…
- You count a stranger’s breathing rate while waiting in a queue.
- You have hand gel in every bag, coat pocket and car door.
- You think hospital coffee is “actually not bad”.
- You say “sharp scratch” when you hand someone a pin.
- You can eat a full meal while discussing wound care.
- You instinctively check the colour of someone’s lips when they say they feel unwell.
- You write the date and time on leftovers in the fridge, and sign them.
- Your idea of a relaxing evening is sitting down. That’s it. Just sitting.
- You know the vending machine stock better than the menu at your favourite restaurant.
- You feel uneasy when someone at a party says “It’s so quiet tonight”.
- You lift heavy things at home using perfect manual handling technique.
- You have opinions about everyone’s shoes, based purely on arch support.
- You read a medical drama and shout “That’s not how you do CPR!” at the screen.
- You plan your social life around a rota that comes out two weeks before the month starts.
- You say “Can you just pop on the bed for me?” to your partner when they mention back pain.
- Your family WhatsApp group is basically a free triage service.
- You have explained the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest at a wedding.
- You fall asleep within 30 seconds anywhere: a bus, a chair, a hairdresser’s.
- Your hands are dry year-round, and you own more hand cream than shoes.
- You have a “work voice” that makes even angry people calm down.
- You can spot a fainter before they faint.
- You carry a pen everywhere, and you are deeply suspicious of anyone who borrows one.
- You can tell what kind of shift it is going to be from the first two minutes of handover.
- You call your friends “my love”, “darling” or “my dear”, like you do with patients.
- You complain about nursing every day, and you would defend it to anyone.
How did you score?
- 1–8: Still fresh. Enjoy it while it lasts.
- 9–17: Fully qualified. The ward is part of you now.
- 18–25: Legend status. You probably trained half of the nurses on your unit.
Share your score in the comments and tag the most “experienced” nurse you know.
