Indian nurses at a professional nursing conference

The Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) is one of the oldest nursing associations in Asia, founded in 1908. Here’s what it does and how it fits alongside the Indian Nursing Council.

Imagine being one of a handful of trained nurses in India more than a century ago, with no national voice and no professional journal. TNAI was created to change that, and it has been speaking for Indian nurses ever since.

This article is part of our guide: Nursing Councils, Associations and Unions Explained.

What TNAI does

  • Represents nurses’ professional interests nationally
  • Publishes The Nursing Journal of India
  • Runs conferences, workshops and continuing education
  • Supports student nurses through its student wing
  • Advocates on nursing education, pay and conditions
  • Represents Indian nursing internationally

TNAI vs the Indian Nursing Council

TNAI is a professional association; membership is voluntary. The Indian Nursing Council and state nursing councils are the regulators that register nurses, approve courses and issue verification for work abroad.

Why membership can help

  • Professional identity and networking
  • Conference and publishing opportunities
  • A voice in national debates on nursing
  • Continuing education to support career growth

But with so many nurses moving abroad, why join an Indian association?

Professional associations offer conferences, publications, networking and a voice in national policy, which matter whether you stay or leave. Many nurses also value staying connected to their home profession while abroad.

Your next step: If you’re an Indian nurse, check the TNAI website for state branch details and upcoming conferences.
