Every nurse and midwife practising in Tanzania needs a valid licence from the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC), and it must be renewed every year. Here’s how registration, renewal and CPD work.
Imagine reaching the front of a long queue, only to be told your CPD logbook is missing a page, and your licence will lapse before you can come back. Annual renewal in Tanzania is straightforward when you prepare, and stressful when you don’t.
This article is part of our guide: Nursing Councils, Associations and Unions Explained.
What is the TNMC?
The TNMC regulates nursing and midwifery education and practice in Tanzania under the Nursing and Midwifery Act. It sets licensure examinations, keeps the register, issues practising licences and handles professional misconduct.
Licensure examination and first registration
Graduates of approved programmes sit the council’s licensure examination before registration. After passing, you register on the TNMC portal, complete your profile and pay the required fees. The council takes exam integrity seriously: in past years it has cancelled results after exam leaks, so always follow official instructions.
How to renew your licence (annually)
- Log in to the TNMC online portal.
- Complete the sections: basic details, education, work experience, documents, CPD and declaration.
- Enter your CPD details from your logbook and upload it.
- Pay the renewal fee by bank or mobile money, and upload proof of payment.
- Wait for notification, then collect your licence with ID and surrender the expired one if required.
Documents to keep ready
- Two recent passport photos on a white background
- National ID or passport
- Your current practising licence
- Copies of registration certificates
- CPD certificate or logbook
- Proof of payment
CPD
Continuing professional development is part of renewal, so record every training session, workshop or course as you go. Our guide to free and low-cost CPD for nurses has ideas.
Working outside Tanzania?
If you apply to work abroad, the overseas regulator will usually request verification of your registration from the TNMC. Keep your licence active while you apply.
But if my employer handles my paperwork, do I need to worry about renewal?
Yes. The licence is in your name, and practising with an expired licence puts your job and registration at risk, not your employer’s. Even if your hospital reminds you, keep your own copy of your licence, CPD logbook and payment receipts.
Your next step: Log in to the TNMC portal this week, check your licence expiry date, and update your CPD logbook so renewal takes minutes, not days.
