Some women notice early signs of pregnancy, such as tender breasts, tiredness, light spotting, mild cramping or nausea, around the time their period is due or a few days before. But many of these symptoms are identical to premenstrual symptoms, so the only reliable way to know is a pregnancy test. Most home tests are most accurate from the first day of a missed period.
12 early signs of pregnancy
- Missed period: the most reliable early sign if your cycles are regular
- Implantation spotting: light pink or brown spotting around 10–14 days after conception, lighter than a period
- Mild cramping without a period
- Tender, swollen or tingling breasts
- Tiredness, often intense
- Nausea with or without vomiting, often from around 4–6 weeks
- Needing to urinate more often
- Food cravings or aversions, and a metallic taste
- Heightened sense of smell
- Bloating and constipation
- Mood changes
- Increased vaginal discharge (thin, white, no smell)
Pregnancy or PMS?
Breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings and cramps occur in both. Signs more suggestive of pregnancy include nausea, a heightened sense of smell, and a missed period. If unsure, test.
When to take a pregnancy test
- Home urine tests detect hCG. They’re most accurate from the first day of a missed period.
- Some sensitive tests can detect pregnancy a few days earlier, but false negatives are more likely.
- Test with the first urine of the morning, when hCG is most concentrated.
- If negative but your period still doesn’t come, test again in 3 to 7 days.
- A blood test at a clinic can detect pregnancy earlier and measure hCG levels.
After a positive test
- Start folic acid if you’re not taking it already
- Book antenatal care early (WHO recommends the first contact within the first 12 weeks)
- Stop alcohol and smoking; check any medicines with a nurse or healthcare provider
- Get tested for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B, and know your blood group and genotype
When to seek urgent care
- Severe one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, dizziness or fainting (possible ectopic pregnancy)
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe vomiting where you can’t keep fluids down
Frequently asked questions
How soon after sex can you feel pregnancy symptoms?
Implantation happens about 6 to 12 days after ovulation, so symptoms usually can’t start before then. Many women notice nothing until after a missed period.
Can you be pregnant and still have a period?
Some women have light bleeding in early pregnancy, but a normal period doesn’t continue. Any bleeding in pregnancy should be checked.
