4 REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT FOR NURSES TRAINED IN OR OUT OF KENYA

Upon passing the Council’s national licensure examination, successful candidates are required to submit an online application for registration requirement for nurses and licensing after the release of the results by nursing council of Kenya. Once registration and licensing is completed, nurses/midwives will receive a practice license and registration certificate within a period of 72 hours and 4 weeks, respectively.

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION – NURSES TRAINED OUTSIDE KENYA (TOK)

TOK nurses/midwives who wish to be entered into the Nursing Council of Kenya roll/register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by Kenyan standards. The Council will verify TOK qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country. Successful applicants will sit for licensure examination, and upon passing will undergo clinical placement for a period of up to a period of 24 weeks, upon which, they are eligible for registration and licensure.

Each nurse/midwife practicing in Kenya is required to be registered and licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya in accordance with the Nurses Act Cap 257 of the Laws of Kenya.

If the Council is satisfied, you will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, you may be invited to sit a written exam or proceed for a clinical placement to acquaint yourself with health care systems in Kenya for a period to be determined. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, you will be eligible for registration.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR NURSES/MIDWIVES TRAINED IN KENYA

Result slip, online application and payments for registration & licensure.

 For the four categories of BScN:-

  1. KRCHN (B) to BScN graduates shall do a direct application for registration and don’t require to go for internship.
  2. RN/M to BScN graduates proceeds for 15 weeks of self-sponsored internship in community health nursing
  3. RN to BScN graduates proceeds for 27 weeks of self-sponsored internship in midwifery and community health nursing
  4. Basic BSCN must complete 1-year internship (MOH or self-sponsored)

NB: Internship should be completed before registration, subject to passing NCK LICENSURE EXAM.

REGISTRATION OF NURSES/MIDWIVES TRAINED OUTSIDE KENYA (TOK)

Meet NCK minimum entry criteria for the nursing/midwifery programme done abroad: – 

  • Pathway 1 meets NCK minimum entry criteria O-level mean grade, with cluster subjects; 
  • Pathway 2 meets NCK minimum entry criteria O-level mean grade, without cluster subjects.

Must have completed the nursing/midwifery programme, registered and licensed by the country of training, and present original certificate and license

Make official application, attach required documents for verification and make payments of the prescribed fees.

NCK verifies nursing/midwifery cadre applied for, with the foreign institution and board/ council of the country of training (N.B – the applicant facilitates this process).

The applicant applies and sits for the licensure exam in line with NCK exam timetable.

Upon passing the licensure exam the graduate proceeds for 12 to 24 weeks of clinical orientation

Upon completion of the clinical orientation, the nurse/ midwife Makes an online application for registration and licensure

NURSES TRAINED IN KENYA
ONLINE APPLICATION & PAYMENTS.

  1. Result slip, online application and payments for  registration & licensure, instant licensure, certificate issuance in two weeks, certificate specifically issued to the nurse – by policy.
  1. BSCN of two categories with regard to internship before registration subject to passing NCK EXAM.

 i). Upgrading KRCHN (B) successful in the NCK licensure exam does direct application for registration and does not require internship.

REGISTRATION OF NURSES TRAINED OUTSIDE KENYA (NTOK)

  • Meet NCK minimum entry criteria for the  nursing program  done abroad- mandatory- pathway 1 meets nursing program  O- level mean grade with cluster subjects, Pathway 2 meets O-level mean grade without cluster subjects.
  • Must have completed the nursing program, registered and licensed by the country of training- evidence- present original certificate and license
  • Make official application by the prescribed form, make required  attachments & payments of prescribed fee
  • NCK verifies nursing cardre  applied for, with the foreign institution and board/ council of the country of training- nurse facilitates this
  • Sit NCK exam as appropriate in line with the April and August NCK exam series
  • Pass the Exam to be eligible to  undergo 12 to 24 weeks clinical orientation
  • Make  online application for registration and licensure
