Alabama Board of Nursing
The mission of the Alabama Board of Nursing is to safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of the public through licensing and approval of qualified individuals and adopting and enforcing legal standards for nursing education and nursing practice.
Code Commissioner’s note. – Acts 1993, No. 93-183, § 2, provides: “The existence and functioning of the Alabama Board of Nursing, created and functioning pursuant to Sections 34-21-1 to 34-21-63, inclusive, is continued, and those code sections are expressly preserved.”
Please Note: During the 2021 Regular Legislative Session, the Alabama Legislature passed Alabama Act 2021-275, which amended Article I of the Nurse Practice Act to grant the ABN authority to permit and regulate Medication Assistants, Certified (MACs) and Nurse Apprentices.

Article VI LOAN PROGRAM FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSING
Alabama Act No. 2016-353, enacted in 2016, directs the Board to establish the Loan Program for Advanced Practice Nursing. The act is pending official inclusion in the Code of Alabama, but became effective with Governor Bentley’s signature on May 11, 2016. Review Alabama Act No. 2016-353 here.
